Environmental legislation is one of the fundamental foundations for achieving sustainable development, as it contributes to protecting the environment and ensuring the rational use of Natural Resources. In Iraq, despite the existence of some environmental legislation, the implementation of these legislations faces several complex challenges, which hinders the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in light of accelerated climate change. He highlighted the challenges in the weak implementation of environmental laws due to the lack of coordination between the concerned institutions, in addition to the lack of financial resources, as well as the lack of environmental awareness among citizens and the private sector to implement environmental policies.
On the other hand, there are great opportunities that Iraq can benefit from by promoting sustainable environmental policies and taking advantage of technological innovation to improve the efficiency of using natural resources. Regional and international cooperation and building partnerships with international and local environmental organizations can also contribute to improving the implementation of environmental legislation. It is necessary to update the environmental legislation in Iraq in line with the accelerated climate changes, and to strengthen the mechanisms of effective implementation of these legislations. Promote community participation to achieve sustainable development goals and protect the environment for future generations
